Bacteria live in water systems in healthcare

CDC data shows up to 21.6% of hospital acquired infections (HAI's) are from water. Resulting in:

  • 36,000 cases of HAI's annually.
  • 195,000 extra nights in hospital based on an average of 5.3 nights extra due to an HAI.
  • Costing approx $400 Million annually in extra stays.
  • Up to 1,600 deaths may be attributed to bacteria from water in a hospital.

The problem can begin in the plant room

Healthcare, hospitals and aged care facilities typically disinfect their potable water supply as it comes in from the street, at the point of entry (POE).

They do this using various methods, including but not limited to:

  • filtration
  • chlorination
  • reverse osmosis
  • UVC disinfection
  • CuAg disinfection

We know there is already slime, bacteria and other contaminants living in the pipes so POE disinfection is not always effective. During construction pipes are filled with water and pressure tested. Residual water from this process can sit in the pipes for many months with bacteria slowly growing. There have been instances of rags, shards of brass, sawdust, and thread tape being found in pipes.

The only solution is to disinfect water at the point of use - GenAqua
